You make a strong point. Captain America was never about the country, though he was aligned with what the country stood for at that time.
I was getting ready to write America off, currently getting driven into the ground, most of the bill of rights ignored (the second amendment became the right to wear short sleeve shirts quite awhile ago)
The system was built on great things but even the founding fathers admitted it would need an update or rewrite eventually, instead congress opted to scribble all over it with ‘amendments.’
Experts call a 40% chance it falls into depression soon.
This is a wake up call to all Americans, if you don’t want our country to degrade into the very things we used to fight, the very things people left their home countries to come to America to get away from, we are going to need to take a stand.
Neither the Republican and Democratic parties as they exist now will save anything, we have been letting them do the work and they have been doing a crap job at it for over half a century now.
I am due to make my own political message soon, I was going to write America off and call to the other countries in the world, but if the citizens make a stand it CAN still be saved, but not by electing more entitled idiots saying whatever sounds good.
I have to admit that writing this post was not easy.
I mean, I’m not American, I’m Italian and my country has already countless problems on its own. I really didn’t want to sound like I wanted to lecture the United States or Americans on anything.
But the thing is that it’s really scary. Again, I’m not an expert but I’ve always thought that America was built to be the strongest defense against fascism and authoritarianism while apparently it has become that same thing.
The scariest thing to me is how fast it changed. I’m not an expert and I’m not here to draw comparisons but here we do have a similar problem with far right government but the Italian constitution proved to be definitely “solid” against those kind of menaces. The American one, definitely less apparently. In only a year everything changed so fast that it’s really scary.
It’s still not over and I’m almost sure that in the end all of this administration will be remembered as it should: as the most pathetic, evil and fundamentally stupid administration ever.
The only thing we can do now is stand for what we believe in and wait for this to end.
Yeah, you specified that you weren’t American, no worries.
I am though and I was getting ready to write the states off completely, but you inspired me.
The country has been slowly declining over the last half century at least, political infighting, corruption etc. the people getting elected to office have been getting more and more extreme. Part of why the current president got elected, he promised strong moves to return America to its former glory.
But here’s the problem with that:
The old ways are done, trying to go back to them, to hold onto them, is exactly what happened to Rome. We need to be progressive, not regressive, find new ways to be strong. Don’t get me wrong, I’m conservative, but neither the Republican nor Democratic parties are actually trying to do anything to keep the country on the map. The system is stale, if the country is to be saved we need a bigger change than electing a president who is stuck in the past.
I have some ideas. They will be in my ‘political post’ let’s just say the world is getting too small, countries were designed for a bigger world when ordinary communication took days, hours or weeks
I'm feel so honored to hear that my post somehow encouraged you to write something. Truly, it's probably the nicest compliment I could receive here.
Also, I totally agree that right now it's not even about left and right or conservative and progressive, it's about waking up and facing the fact that this awesome, important and great country is now held hostage of a few people that clearly only care about themselves.
This post was my way of saying that I stand with all people fighting for liberty and democracy, even in those countries that still brag about being the literal representation of freedom while behaving like the worst dictatorship.
Thank you so much for reading (as always!) and yes I totally agree.
Characters like Captain America were always important but now probably more than ever, to remind us to stay together and fight every form of oppression 💪🏻
I felt this deeply. It’s strange how the things we build to protect ourselves—those mental walls or 'shields'—eventually just end up making us tired. Even if the shield is made of vibranium, as you put it, there’s still a real exhaustion in trying to hold everything together for too long. You’ve put that feeling into words so well. Sometimes just acknowledging how heavy the armor has become is the first step to finally letting it go. Thanks for being so open about this.
I really loved the metaphor of the shield that you used, which is of course extremely fitting to this case.
Understanding that there is a problem is the first step to fix it and I truly believe that the American people are doing the best in their current situation.
As I said in the post, I really find it hard to believe in a country that has become such a parody of itself but at the same time when I see the huge protests all around the world I remember that, like Captain America, it was never about the country or the land but about the people that lives in it and what they represent.
Freedom was never about invading other countries and taking all of their oil, it was always about fighting for what is right against tyranny and fascism and I'm seeing it now more than ever, so I definitely still believe in America.
Take it from this American, Tommaso, that your premise is very much on point with Steve Rogers. Too many people let the costume dazzle them. The man under it is a hardcore rebel at heart, prepared to do what's right over what people SAY is right.
Which isn't to say he can't get disillusioned. Jim Krueger wrote one of the most devastating lines he ever had Cap say: "I thought I was the American Dream. And then I woke up." Still, I think of him in Endgame, his shield shattered, a whole army coming right at him, allies fallen. He picks himself, tightens the strap on that broken shield, gets ready to go down swinging.
Thank you! I’m glad that you got my point and you agree with it.
My greatest fear for this post was to be sounding too much patronizing while I clearly just like comics and overall feel like being a kind person is a good thing.
I still believe in America, even now that it’s probably at its lowest point. I’ll always believe in it and in what it used to represent.
No, far from patronizing, I promise. That usually comes from the cynics who take the opposite view and are just so ANNOYING about it.
If anything, you captured the pain of Americans like me who are caught up in this nightmare. I'm actually surprised that you're an Italian, given how right you got it.
I felt Brubaker's Cap run did a good job of tackling the current politics of the day while being a really entertaining comic. Always my go to example of how to incorporate politics into a story. Great article!
Also, I totally agree on that. I think Brubaker’s run is still one of the best of recent history.
I also think that the current Zdarsky one started really good!
It’s still very early to judge, but I feel that it’s very influenced by the current political climate and, for now, it seems like a interesting story. Have you read it? What do you think of it?
You're welcome!! Love Zdarksy just as a writer and from what I've read of his Cap run I totally agree. It's very much influenced by today's political climate.
Ooh. I loved that last page. “No. You move.”

I was hoping to have a few more readers before dropping that bomb of a post, but my fingers are getting itchy

Wonderful message! We should love each other a little more! I think we need some captain America to go teach some people acceptance while we’re at it!
